The Fortune Cookie Challenge

Earlier this week I met my husband for lunch. We decided to try out a ramen bowl at a local cafeteria. It was a delicious meal, packed full with a variety of vegetables of our choice, the perfect amount of noodles and a savory broth.  To complement our meal we received a fortune cookie from our chef. After we finished eating, we broke open our cookies and revealed our “fortunes” to each other.

Although our fortunes were pretty optimistic, Brennan had a unique idea.  Since we don’t believe in the messages inside fortune cookies, he proposed that we find what the word of God says that would replace the fortune. Quickly he laid out the ground rules of our exercise:

  • We could not use scriptures we had memorized or were familiar with.
  •  We agreed to share our scriptures with one another the following night.

I used my Bible App and performed a word search. This provided various scriptures, but I wanted to make sure the scripture I chose was in context. I read each scripture and then read the corresponding chapter.  I found my scripture and wrote it in my planner for easy reference.

Brennan and I revealed our scriptures to each other and both of us realized that we had found more than one scripture.
Brennan’s fortune message

Based on his fortune message, Brennan chose Job 5:8, 9

“But as for me, I would seek God,
And to God I would commit my cause—
Who does great things, and unsearchable,
Marvelous things without number

and Psalm 40:5

Many, O LORD my God, are Your
Wonderful works
Which You have done;
And Your thoughts toward us
Cannot be recounted to You in order;
If I would declare and speak of them,
They are more than can be numbered.
My fortune message
Based on my fortune message, I chose II Chronicles 1:5-12

Now the bronze altar that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD; Solomon and the assembly sought Him there.  And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.
On that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
And Solomon said to God: “You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place.  Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.  Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?”
Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king—wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.”
